Kostiuk lost the first set 5-7, but in the second she took revenge on her opponent, winning 6-1. In the decisive third game, it came down to a tiebreaker, where the Ukrainian proved to be stronger - 7:6 (10:6).

It should be noted that the tennis players spent 2 hours and 55 minutes on the court. Kostiuk served three times, made 11 double faults and used 4 out of 8 break points.

It should be added that this was the second personal meeting between Kostiuk and Mertens. In their first match, the Ukrainian was defeated.

Having overcome the second round, Kostiuk repeated her personal best at the Australian Open. Previously, she had reached this stage of the competition in Melbourne three times (2018, 2022, 2023).

In the 1/16 finals of the Australian Open, Marta will play the winner of the match between Maria Sakkari of Greece and Elina Avanesyan of Russia, who, due to Russia's full-scale military invasion of Ukraine, is allowed to play only in a neutral status.

Elina Svitolina and Diana Jastremska can also play in the third round of this Grand Slam tournament, as they will play their second-round matches on Thursday, 18 January. Svitolina will face Bulgarian Victoria Tomova, while Yastremska will compete against Russian Varvara Gracheva, who plays under the French flag.
